Internet Safety

Internet safety is largely in your own hands

Internet security is everybody's business

We need to be able to use the internet without a constant worry about who is spamming us, who is trying to steal our identity, who is trying to rob our bank.

So we want you - everyone - to read and take part in discussions of safety on the internet: to know the scams and the like so that they can avoid them. You can report on any attempts to steal your identify or your money

On the nature of spam

Published in

As RaA moves from the totally unknown to the 'getting to be known' we have to deal with a completely new issue - spam put on as either comments or guest book entries.

The software is set up so that it won't accept links from casual visitors to other sites. It's a pity to be sure but when it was open we were inundated with opportunities to buy viagra, or to download what in my youth were called 'dirty pictures' so we had to change the settings to prevent it.
In the process we prevented many innocent links but there you go.

Somebody's Law

Yesterday I was planning to draw up a page on the use of eBay to go onto the 'Trading on the Internet' section of Lifes3rd phase, then when I watched the 6:00pm news on the box, up came two items on eBay.
  1. eBay had been fined some extra-ordinary sum for allowing fake Diors to be sold on the site
  2. That they were also auctioning discounted credit notes from major stores.

Well, of course, no market that wants to remain reputable can allow illegal trading on its patch - and ignorance is no defence - but what does that tell us, the punters.

Safety on the Net

Every thinking user of the internet is concerned

...about the daily tales of fraud and identity theft: yet the net is perhaps uniquely useful to our generation, allowing us to take part in world-wide movements and to have friends and advisors far from our social physical location.
