4000 Spammers and counting

4,000 spammers and counting!

Google rules the web

So every site must do it homage if they want to be seen. Key to this is 'page rank' and key to page rank is the number of other sites with links to yours

Wikipedia on 'Spam'

# Spam (electronic), unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic messages including
* unsolicited e-mail or text messages
* Forum spam, posting advertisements or useless posts on a forum
* manipulating a search engine to create the illusion of popularity for web pages
* posting random comments and random tips/ideas or promoting commercial services to blogs, wikis, guest books
* advertisements and forgery on newsgroups

Trackbacks

So we invite visitors to link us to the indexes where they found us, and many people do

But spammers do too, and they have software to post hundreds of spams at a time.

Once bitten...

We should have known, we had to withdraw our guest book just a few weeks ago. It was being 'spammed' daily

Eyes off the ball

We've been busy with software updates, other measures to get our 'hit' rate up and, dare we say it, a holiday. We didn't notice that you were being invited to buy drugs, to view unsavoury pictures and borrow money.

Now it's taken us 3 days to go through the trackbacks and try to recognise the genuine amongst the plainly distasteful

Facts and Figures

Retired and Active and its sister sites offer nearly 300 pages of material for the over-50s.

Our visitor figures are growing but still minor compared with the big fish in our pond and

  • Between 1,000 and 1,200 people come on the sites every day.
  • Between them the visit between 2,500 and 4,000 pages every day.
  • Since we started enrolling 'members' we now have nearly 100

Of course these fall far short of our targets in all areas but we progress.

From our editor

When you consider we started from scratch, without professional programmers

4,000 spammers can't be wrong

and with no capital

We haven't done so badly but we need your material

Retired and Active is a 'Wiki' site

built on the thoughts and knowledge of its visitors, and we need your help to make it so.

So we want to know what you think so we can plan ahead.
