The arrest of Radovan Karadzic, in the guise of a harmless if useless practitioner of alternative medicine makes me wonder about the nature of all things foreign. When I worked in Nigeria there was a sign on the main road advertising 'Madame Comfort - Midwife and Cement Dealer', and across the road a native doctor had cures to 'exam failure' and 'wife doesn't love you'.
They lived in a failing state where education was primative, and life short and painful.
For us lucky enough to live our lives in rational democracies, it's hard to realise that the rest of the world doesn't think like us, act like us and certainly doesn't believe like us.
Karadzic can metamorphise himself from warlord to harmless crackpot in a twinkling of and eye, and enough people will believe in the harmless crackpot to give hime a living. How does a nation given to 'ethnic cleansing' move on seamlesly to Orthodox Meditation and othe mumbo jumbo?
He clearly didn't believe in the rule of law so he's probobly in sympathy with the government in Goa who've decided that the long established residency laws can be swept aside because a few expats have bought themselves nice houses there.
Wow: irrational? I don't know, it may be very rational from their point of view. They've got these people's money now, what more use do they have for them?
It may rain rather too much here, summer may be a single week in August, but most people seem to be rational.
